1966 GTO – Block, Primer, Paint

I was almost done with the bodywork when I noticed that the seam seal I used on the drip rail was pulling away from the lip. I ended up buying some AC Delco, OEM seam sealer, and realized that it flows out better than the firm stuff that I used the first time. I am just glad I noticed before paint went on the car.

Aftermarket tail light louvers are one piece, and don’t have a separate chrome strip that goes across each louver. They are a polished rib that will have to be masked when painting.

Epoxy on the inside of the hood and trunk. The body has been blocked out with 400 and 800. I will be going over the burn through spots with surfacer next.

The car is masked off, and the spots primered. After that the car is blocked out with 400 and 800 again. It goes a lot quicker with the surfacer versus the epoxy.

Once everything is blocked out the masking is removed, and the car is cleaned up for masking for paint.

All the parts were blown off, wiped down, chemically cleaned, and a tack rag used before paint.

The base coat is on the car! The lighting doesn’t do the metallic justice, but once the clear is on it will look a lot nicer.

Parts are placed on rack, and hung to get things sprayed. The inside of the hood and truck will need to be painted later. This is being done at the end of the season, and the main focus was to get the car and all the parts painted before the weather changes. The small paint work needed can be done in the heated side of the shop later and I have all the parts spread out in the un-heated side to paint all the exterior faces at the same time.

There we go! The clear really brings the color to life!

I used a step up from what I have normally been shooting for clear and used the ATX line on this job. The clear really laid down nice an flowed out better than the standard line that I use.

This is the hood tachometer bazel laid out in the sun to show the metallic

. . . and here is the cowl intake for the hood.

The car is almost ready to come off the stand. Once the doors are painted on the inside and hung, the car will be back on the ground again for assembly.
